The world wide celebration of Day of the African Child was approved by the United Nations in
commemoration of the violence that took place on June sixteenth, 1976,
when black school children were demonstrating in Soweto, South Africa,
against poor quality of Education among others by their Apartheid colonial
masters.

In Nigeria and Anambra in particular, children are asking for a
friendly justice system that guarantees the rights of children and
protects them from all forms of child based violence and in ensuring
the welfare of children in need.

This child justice friendly system will also protect the interest of
the child when in conflict with the law, in subjects of parental
dispute and as potential claimants for redress when their rights are
violated.

Speaking on the Day, UNICEF desk officer in Anambra Broadcasting
Service, ABS, Awka, Mrs. Franca Madike, expressed delight that
Governor, Willie Obiano and his wife, Dr Ebelechukwu, have personally
led the campaign in ensuring that children in Urban and remote parts
of the state are immunized.

She stated that the UNICEF is endlessly committed to issues that
concern women and children hence the aggressive steps to reduce the
figures of maternal mortality which at the present in the state stands
at one hundred and twenty deaths in every one hundred thousand births.

They have also introduced Radio and TV programs meant to educate the
members of the public on all forms of health issues concerning
children and women.

For Anambra state government and UNICEF, it is a day to renew their
ongoing commitments towards improving the right of children through
special reports, radio/TV phone in programs and others.
