Love is one of the most important things that count in every endeavour, relationship or commitment in life. Our life and emotions are controlled or influenced by the persons or the things we love or hate. We love, like and hate each and every day but certain seasons and months make love more pronounced and celebrated.

February 14 is celebrated and dedicated in many countries of the world as ‘lovers’ day’ shinning the light on the huge sacrifices made by Saint Valentine – a priest who went against the authorities of state to show the importance of love. The activities performed and the places visited on this day often signify how we value those we claim to love. Even though Valentine’s Day is an annual celebration, couples and friends use it to renew, revive and refresh their love. Celebration of love is highly determined by the location, economy and environment under which lovers found themselves.

Unfortunately, the economic crunch and insecurity in Nigeria would adversely affect this year celebration. Love is a universal and eternal principle. It is not just a virtuous disposition, it motivates our thoughts, words and action. Beyond celebrating romantic love, this day reminds us as leaders and citizens of Nigeria, the importance of love in the well being of our country. It underlines that some of the challenges we face today as a country is because we lack practical love. Insecurity, poor economy, rising inflation, increasing poverty levels can be managed if the leaders and the led will make love a priority in their daily actions. We realize every day that love makes the world to go round and that selfishness and self-centeredness make lives stunted.

Generally, we all show love and affection differently and according to our nature and understanding. It is very important that couples learn every day how to love their partners. We must strive to learn every day new ways, styles and ideas to express love. Lack of love and care for someone close to us have their

consequences on the society. Showing love could be the simplest or the most complex thing we need to do. Love is intentional. It is sacrificial and service-oriented. Love is the bedrock of relationships and societies.

February 14 evokes memories and ideas on love. Let us not just stop in planning to celebrate love; we must go on to be great husbands, wives, dads, mums and friends who make a great difference. The rough sea moments and rocky uphill climbs should not stop us from showing love. If we do not sincerely love our spouses, we may not have a successful family, a progressive society and a United Nigeria.
