A non-governmental organisation, All for Women Initiative, A-WIN, has called for more representation of women in political and leadership roles in Nigeria.
Speaking in Abuja, the President of the organization, Comrade Stella Igboka said that women are poorly represented in political and leadership positions in the country and that there is a need to address the inequality.
Comrade Igboka was speaking when she led members of the organization on a courtesy visit to the Member Representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency, Honourable Afam Ogene at the National Assembly complex in Abuja.
According to comrade Igboka, since the return of democracy in 1999, the number of women elected into political positions have not been encouraging which affects women in the society, ranging from domestic violence, child molestation, trafficking, among numerous others.
The A-WIN President used the occasion to invite the federal lawmaker to a strategic and crucial summit to be organized by A-WIN, as a key Speaker scheduled to hold in Anambra State with the Theme: “Gear Up, Aspire, and Win” as part of their efforts in commemorating this year’s International Women’s Day celebration.
Responding, Hon. Ogene thanked the group for the visit and said that his office is always open and ready to partner with the activities of women and highlighted the importance of women to the advancement of a better society.
The federal lawmaker enjoined stakeholders to celebrate and support the activities of mothers, women, and the girl child as their instrumentality in the society can never be over-emphasized.
