The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, has advocated adequate security, accessible and quality education for students at all levels for manifestation of the transformative power of education in peaceful society building.

 

UNICEF Chief Field Officer, Enugu, Mrs Juliet Chiluwe, made the call during a one-day Multi-Zonal Press Conference, with the theme, “Learning for Lasting Peace ” held at Independence Layout, Enugu state.

Mrs Chiluwe highlighted that the conference is aimed at underscoring the transformative power of education in preventing conflicts, promoting harmony and empowering children with sustainable and qualitative education for societal peace and development.

 

She said that education is not only a fundamental human right but also a catalyst for social change and a means to address global challenges.

 

Mrs Chiluwe explained that the objective of UNICEF centres on delivering commitments, ending the learning crisis, and advocating for increased domestic and international financing for education.

According to Communications Officer UNICEF, Enugu Field Office, Dr Ijeoma Onuoha-Ogwe, UNICEF is aware of the daunting global challenges of climate change, democracy erosion, persistent inequalities and discrimination, and called on government at all levels to create the enabling environment for peaceful coexistence.

 

Dr Onuoha-Ogwe noted that UNICEF focuses on prioritizing learning outcomes and skills development, to ensure that no child is left behind.

 

Speaking, the Commissioner for Education, Enugu State, Professor Ndubueze Mbah, said that government is conscious of the transformative power of education, considers same as the cornerstone of progress, and will do more in promotion of qualitative education in the interest of the society.

He stated that learning for peace entails fostering empathy, accommodation, and freedom, which according to him are essential qualities for addressing the complex global issues faced in today’s society.
