Today across the globe, is World Civil Defence Day.

World Civil Defence Day, celebrated on March one every year, has ‘Uniting the world’s leading industry specialists for the safety & security of future generations as this 2023 theme.

In 1990, the International Civil Defense Organization, ICDO, declared this day a global holiday to celebrate the significance of civil defense and to commemorate those, who have sacrificed for it.

The International Civil Defense Organization, which is a non-profit intergovernmental organization that works to protect facilities and the environment while also helping people grow and stay secure, has fifty-nine member countries that strive to make people more aware about the critical role it plays in disaster recovery as it promotes awareness among citizens about disaster preparation, avoidance, and self-protection.

Speaking on the significance of the day, the chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Anambra State Council, Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, asked all to work together to raise awareness about the need of civil protection and strive to save as many lives as possible.

In commemoration of the day, Dr. Odogwu used the opportunity to call on parents to teach their children and themself the precautions they should all take when faced with a life-threatening emergency.

He also noted that the day, aims to raise public knowledge of civil defense, emergency preparedness and crisis administration in better preparing citizens to assist in emergency situations and to minimize the risk of catastrophe as everybody has the right to be informed of and equipped for the risks they may encounter in life just as they would for any other illness.

World Civil Defense Day, is calling on every individual to learn about all the safety measures available.
