Member countries of the United Nations are observing today as World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day to ponder over the invaluable contributions of the societies for global peace and humanitarian services. The celebration is in commemoration of the founder of the Red Cross Movement, Jean Henry Dunant, a Swiss Citizen, born on May 8, 1828 in Geneva, Switzerland.

Jean Henry Dunant started his humanitarian services in the battle field of Solferino in Northern Italy in June 1859. The present day Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement was formerly founded in 1863. The Theme for this year’s World Red Cross Day is: “To Highlight The Universal, Human, And Diverse Aspects of the Red Cross Movement”.

The theme aims to highlight the principles of the Red Cross Movement and make humanitarian work a priority for all. Diseases, economic disparity and similar causes lead to a great deal of suffering in the world. Red Cross is dedicated to helping those in need through humanitarian acts.

World Red Cross Day also highlights the impact of kindness and compassion in the world. Going just a little out of your way to help those in need can make a big difference in the world. No movement can be successful without volunteers working passionately towards a common cause and the Red Cross Movement is no different.

As a neutral body, it does not take sides in hostilities, political, racial or religious issues. The desire to bring assistance and relief pro bono and without discrimination to the wounded in the battle field and in any disaster in its international and national capacity is a purpose and objective of Red Cross. A non-profit organization with homogenous acceptance throughout the world, membership of Red Cross Society is open to all and depends on the benevolence of all who are filled with the milk of human kindness to achieve its desired objectives.

The provision of a blood collection agency is equally a main focus of the Red Cross. People are encouraged to support by donating blood. In Nigeria, almost 5 million people require a blood transfusion each year. The work of the Red Cross also includes first aid, emergency response, health and social care. Preparing, preventing, and mitigating for disasters, refugee services and helping people to trace and track persons and missing families during the times of war. They help to protect people, mostly in armed conflicts.

We, therefore, beg every Nigerian to be BE HUMAN KIND TO ACHIEVE TRUCE AND PEACE. Truce is an agreement between enemies or opponents to stop fighting, struggling or arguing for a certain issues.

We commend Governor Chukwuma Soludo for the wonderful work his administration is doing to make Anambra a secure, livable, green and peaceful state. Today, Anambra State has become a reference point, touch bearer and role model to rule of law and democratic principles in the comity of nations of the world. Congratulations to Ndi Anambra.

We are One People; One Nation, let us have Love For Humanity.
