Anambra State has been described as number one in disability inclusion in Nigeria.

Members of the disability community who converged on the Anambra liaison office in Abuja with a thank-you message for Governor Willie Obiano said no other State comes close to Anambra in addressing issues affecting persons living with disabilities.

Ekwi Ajide of our Abuja Bureau reports that the group led by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Disability Matters, Barrister Chucks Ezewuzie, noted that events of the past  years of Governor Willie Obiano’s administration present incontrovertible evidence of a paradigm shift from talk to work, charity to opportunity, and privilege to right.

They stated that the Obiano administration has been a game changer for the disability community, as the Governor approved the establishment of the Office of the Governor on Disability Matters.

The group counted appointment of a person with disability to the position of a Special Adviser to the Governor, employment of several persons with disabilities into the State workforce, promotion of civil servants with disabilities, among others, as some of the laudable marks of the present administration for the disability community.

They posited that Anambra remains the only State in the South-East that has a law in place to protect the rights of people with disabilities, and expressed joy that Governor Obiano has demonstrated unwavering commitment to disability inclusive policy emphasized in his annual budget speech for 2021 financial year.

The group called on relevant authorities in the country to emulate Governor Obiano and his wife, Ebelechukwu’s empowerment programme to ensure inclusion, equal opportunity and participation of people with disabilities in governance.
