After a chaotic day of protest and violence, the Congress has certified Democrats Joe Biden as the next president and Kamala Harris as vice president of the United States.

The action finalizes the 2020 United States electoral process and makes it  clear that Mr. Biden will be inaugurated as president on January twentieth, President Donald Trump’s refusal to concede notwithstanding.

The United States Constitution requires Congress to count the votes of the Electoral College submitted by various States.

Mr. Biden won three hundred and six electors to two hundred and thirty-two for Mr Trump.
