Today across the globe is observed as Day of the Imprisoned Writer.

The Day of the Imprisoned Writer, which started in 1981 and was the product of PEN International’s Writers in Prison Committee, has since its introduction, used as a holiday by PEN to call for the release of imprisoned writers, advocate for better protection for journalists, activists and fight for justice for those writers, who gave up their lives in the ultimate sacrifice to preserve the truth.

Observed annually on November fifteen, Day of the Imprisoned Writer is aimed at raising awareness about censorship, harassment, and persecution of writers and journalists worldwide.

While censorship is a growing problem today with many government agencies spying on their citizens, especially anti-vocal government critics, whistleblowers, and political activists, in some countries, freedom of the press is non-existent, and independent journalism results in arbitrary detention.

Speaking on the day, the chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Anambra State Council, Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, appealed for the full implementation of the Freedom of Information, FOI, Act, passed into Law by both chambers of the National Assembly and assented to by former President Goodluck Jonathan on the twenty-eight day of May 2011, also called for the release of journalists detained across the globe while discharging their duties.

Dr. Odogwu advocated for absolute protection of journalists, whom he described as the watch dog of the society, especially now that the 2023 General Elections is near.

He charged candidates of all political parties to advise their supporters and followers to toe the path of peace, reminding them of President Muhammadu Buhari’s order to security agencies to ensure that the 2023 elections is held in an atmosphere devoid of rancor or violence.

On the part of journalists, Dr. Odogwu encouraged them to always be professional in their reportage, balance their stories, be as wise as a serpent, clever as a Dove and live today to report tomorrow.
