COMR. NNAMDI NWEKE

On November 29, 2019, during the 7th Quadrennial Anambra State Delegates Conference, the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) delegates from the 21 LGAs elected Comrade Adigwe Chikwelu as State President; Nwafor Augustine, Deputy State President; Nwankwo Ikemefuna, Treasurer; Nwisu Peter, Auditor one; Ofole Victor, Auditor two and Ononye Patrick, State Trustee one.

Others are: Ezedinachi Clement, Trustee two; Nweke Nnamdi, Publicity Secretary; Uche Nworah, Welfare Officer; Uyawune Eucharia, Chairperson, Women Committee; Ifediorah Sylvester, Youth leader and Chief Netufo Segun, State Secretary.

Since after the election, NULGE Anambra state has recorded some great achievements, including the establishment of functional information platform for proper information gathering and dissemination among the workers; restoration of names of council workers, whose names were mistakenly removed from the payroll since September, 2019 and bridging the long existing disparity in salaries between the state and local government workers.

Other achievements are: establishment of a good cordial relationship between the Local Government Service Commission and the Union; immediate payment of the delayed 2017, 2018 and 2019 salary increments and other arrears; recovery of the over deduction of fund by the Startimes Company from the local government workers and involvement of the local government workers in co-operative ventures and it benefits, among others.

The 2020 edition of NULGE Week and Welfare Day celebrations come up on November 12 and 13, 2020. The events are aimed at promoting social interaction and rewarding local government workers and noble people in the society for their contributions to the grassroots as a tier of government in Nigeria. It is a re-union for both serving and retired staff in the local government service of the state.

NULGE will use the events to recognize some personalities who have made tremendous commitment to human capacity building and grassroots development as well as immortalize those who have distinguished themselves in various fields.

Among the events lined up are cultural carnival/renaming and unveiling of NULGE Secretariat as Comrade (Sir) Austin Ezepue (Agadaga) NULGE House and installation of Agadaga Leadership Merit Award. There will also be a grand carnival by the 21 LGAs across the major streets of Amawbia and Awka, terminating at the Union Secretariat Complex.

The late Comrade (Sir) Austin Ezepue, popularly known as Agadaga, was a Veteran Labour Leader. He served the union as State President, both in the old and new Anambra states. He was an inspirational leader with exceptional charisma and determination. Agadaga was a great orator.

During his tenure, a lot of notable achievements were recorded for the growth and development of the local government system, the state and the nation at large. As a good leader, Sir Austin Ezepue nurtured and mentored many generals in NULGE, both within and outside Anambra state.

Another very remarkable highlight of the celebration on the second day at Njikoka Local Government Council Secretariat is NULGE Welfare celebration, under the Chairmanship of Dr Nnamdi Nwadiogbu, Chairman, Oyi local government. Governor Willie Obiano is expected as the special guest of honour.

The NULGE Welfare Day celebration was held last about eight years ago. The present leadership revamped it with a lot of activities to make it more lively and result-oriented. This includes, Award of Aluta Governor of the Year on Governor Obiano. This is a recognition and appreciation of the workers-friendly governor’s initiatives and programmes through prompt and regular payment of workers’ salaries and allowances, pensions and gratuities, entitlements and other benefits.

NULGE Anambra state therefore invites all NULGE Branch Chairmen, Excos, Trade Union Leaders, Traditional rulers and Media to grace the occasion.

May God give the leadership of this great union the fortitude and commitment to new priorities that will ensure that hope and the collective dreams and aspirations of the union by the fallen and living heroes will be kept alive. Happy celebrations. Aluta Continua
