Like the Biblical Moses, the Anglican Bishop of Aguata Diocese, Right Reverend Samuel Chukwudi Ezeofor, will on Thursday May 23rd lead Diocesan officials, clergy and delegates to Umuchu for the first session of the seventh Synod of Aguata Diocese at Saint Thomas Parish Umuchu in Aguata Local Government Area.

 

The synod theme, “The God’s great task for the Church, the great commandment,” Mark chapter twelve verses twenty-eight to thirty-four, was carefully chosen by the President of the synod Right Reverend Ezeofor in view of declining commitment of many faithful in keeping the commandments of God, which is a great task given to them through Moses on Mount Sinai.

 

Synod emanated from the apostolic council held in Jerusalem, three years after the conversion of Paul as recorded in Acts of the Apostle chapter fifteen. The council of Jerusalem was a significant event in the early Christian church. Today the Church continues with the meeting and called it synod which is a period when the House of Bishop, clergy and laity in the Diocese meet to reappraise Diocesan performances in the areas of evangelism, setting various agenda for the Diocese, look into some existing laws of the Diocese and make amend where necessary. Synod which is the highest decision making body of the Diocese.

Aguata Diocese of the Anglican Communion has continued to record successes in various sectors since its inauguration on September 4, 2005 including achievements in the Education sector, Health, Human capital development, skill acquisition programmes, spiritual awakening programmes and many more. It is on record that the Diocesan All Saints Seminary Ekwulobia is being rated among the best in terms of quality education, moral conduct and discipline, likewise the Saint Mary the Virgin Convent Ufuma and Saint Catherine Comprehensive Secondary School Nanka. Recently, Aguata Diocese in its commitment to empower the youths with skills and good morals established an institute of Arts and Craft at Uga.

 

 

The Institute has quality facilities and Hostels for enhanced teaching and learning. The diocese has a well furnished printing press at Oko while an ultra modern building to accommodate sophisticated equipment for the printing press is currently on going.

 

Saint Thomas Church the venue of the synod attained Archdeaconry status in 2006 and became the Archdeaconry Headquarters.

 

Saint Thomas Anglican Church has held two synods in 1994 and 2013 respectively. The Archdeaconry otherwise known as Umuchu Archdeaconry is made up of Saint Andrew’s, Holy Trinity, Saint Silas (New Jerusalem), and Saint Peter’s all in Umuchu, while another church under the Archdeaconry is Saint Mary’s Umuomaku.

 

Saint Thomas Anglican Church has over the years, produced prominent sons and daughters who have served God and humanity in diverse capacities and in different walks of life including Late Venerable C. Mbonu and late Archdeacon Emmanuel Egbunonu.

 

Mention must also be made of Right Reverend Ephraim Ikeakor the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Amichi who has made significant impact in the Mission of God both nationally and internationally and was honoured during the centenary

celebration of Saint Thomas Church, as an illustrious son among other indigenous

 

priests. So as Saint Thomas Church is set to host the synod, the Archdeacon of Umuchu Archdeaconry Venerable Chijioke Nwankwo Chairman Diocesan Central Planning Committee Sir Emmanuel Okpalaoka and Chairman Local Organizing Committee Sir Benson Nwankwo are promising a successful outing, to make the synod a reference point.
