The Federal Road Safety Commission, Anambra State command has warned motorists against overloading, over speeding and dangerous over takings.

 

The Sector Commander Mr Adeoye Irelewuyi, issued the warning during a public enlightenment programme to mark this year’s World Road Safety Day.

Mr. Irelewuyi, who delivered the address of the President of West Africa Road Safety Organization, Ousmane Maiga, revealed that as the day marks the sixteenth year since the establishment of West Africa Road Safety Organization the body has excelled in promoting and encouraging the exchange of experiences and information among members, creating awareness on effects of road traffic crashes in the region among others.

He said that the day which marks the commemoration of the celebration with the theme “Safe and sustainable Transportation in West Africa: Lessons for road safety agencies”, urged member States, non-governmental organizations and stakeholders to drive the mandate to all nooks and cranny of the countries.

 

He stated that most Motorists are fond of risking their lives with over speeding and overloading on highways.

Taking the students and personnel on public enlightenment, the Deputy Corps Commander and Head of Operations, Mrs. Okora Awassam charged operatives of the command to discharge their duties diligently while observing best practices in the profession.

 

She challenged members of the public to discourage trucks from carrying cattle and humans at the same time as it can lead to fatal accidents, or carrying petrol in vehicles as result of scarcity, stating that it will no longer be business as usual as the command will deal decisively with anyone caught violating traffic laws.

Representative of Saint John of God Secondary School, Mrs. Nkorika Okafor commended the command for the programme which she described as very impactful and educational and assured that they will both educate other students and parents of the institution for more enlightenment.

Questions by students formed the highpoints of the event which took place at Federal Road Safety Commission State Command Headquarters in Awka.
