Ten inmates of Awka and Onitsha Correctional Centres have regained freedom through the efforts of a non-governmental organization, ABU Mmaduaburochukwu Foundation.

 

The bail bond of the inmates, five each from Awka and Onitsha, were offset when the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the non-governmental organization, Chief Christopher Attah paid a visit to the centers in commemoration of his birthday.

The freed inmates were also empowered to start their lives again the foundation also facilitated the issuance of international passports to five persons for oversea travels by paying the costs for passports.

 

The foundation also donated food, toiletries and cash to the correctional centres and the less privileged.

Speaking, during the event Chief Attah, said that he loves bringing smile to people’s face, which is the reason for celebrating with the less privileged.

 

He further elaborated that the initiative was to provide the inmates a chance to rectify past mistakes and contribute to societal progress.

On his part, Deputy Comptroller of Onitsha Correctional Centre, Mr. Sunday Igwe, and his Awka counterpart, Mr. Solomon Ubah, described Chief Attah’s intervention as a rare achievement in the society, and urged the public to collaborate with them, because some of the inmates at the correctional centres have been there for good number of years because they could not meet their bail terms.

 

They advised the freed inmates to refrain from criminal activities and embrace a positive lifestyle, as well as those in custody to utilize skill acquisition programmes to enhance their value and readiness for reintegration into the society.

In their separate interviews, some freed inmates, Messrs. Onyebuchi Okonkwo, Echezona Okonkwo, and Onyekachi Okeke expressed gratitude to Chief Attah for the gesture, pledging to embark on a new path in life.

 

Chief Attah also visited the less privileged and Priests Welfare Home in Awka.
