A bill to establish the Anambra State Commuters Manifest Scheme, 2024, has passed second reading at the Anambra state House of Assembly.

 

The bill, sponsored by the member representing Ihiala Constituency One and Chief Whip of the House, Barrister Jude Ngobili, aims to enhance transportation efficiency, accountability, and safety measures by implementing a comprehensive manifest system to monitor travel activities in the state.

leading debate on the bill during plenary, Barrister Ngobili emphasized the need for the establishment of an agency to manage the database of commuters within the state and provide assistance to victims of road crashes.

 

He highlighted lack of support for victims in such situations and stressed the importance of the proposed agency in addressing the issue, while arguing that the bill would serve the interests of commuters, bring order to the transport sector, and boost government revenue.

The bill received broad support from the member representing Anaocha Constituency Two, Sir Ejike Okechukwu his Anaocha Constituency One counterpart, Honourable Nkechi Ogbuefi, Dr. Jude Akpua representing Njikoka Constituency Two, and his Njikoka Constituency One Counterpart, Honourable Chidiebele Ibemeka.

 

Also, the member representing Onitsha North Constituency Two, Barrister Patrick Okafor, his Ogbaru Constituency One counterpart, Honourable Noble Igwe, Barrister Jude Umennajiego representing Onitsha South Two and his Ihiala Constituency Two counterpart, Honourable Golden Iloh, explained that the bill is good for Ndi Anambra and will bring sanity to transport sector and increase government revenue base.

In a similar development, Anambra State Public Complaints, Financial Crime, and Anti-Corruption Commission Bill, 2024 also passed second reading.

 

The bill aims to strengthen efforts in combating financial crimes and corruption within the state.

 

According to the member representing Ekwusigo constituency and Majority Leader of the House, Sir Ikenna Ofodeme explained that if enacted into law, the bill is poised to equip the State government with tools and frameworks to investigate and prosecute cases of financial crimes and corruption.

 

Also, the bill garnered support from lawmakers, including the member representing Ogbaru Constituency One, Honourable Noble Igwe and his Anaocha Constituency Two counterpart, Sir Ejike, and Member representing Anaocha constituency one Honourable Nkechi Ogbuefi, among others.

The Speaker of the House, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze, referred Anambra State Commuters Manifest Scheme Bill, 2024 to committees on Transportation, and Judiciary and Justice, while Anambra State Public Complaints, Financial Crime and Anti-corruption commission bill, 2024 was referred to joint committees on Public Account and Financial and appropriate for further legislative surgery.

 

The Speaker urged them to report back to the House in next three and four weeks respectively.
