The State Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Chief Ifeatu Obi-Okoye has urged the relevant agencies to enlighten the citizens on the consequences of abusing the naira notes to change their attitude towards the currency.

Chief Obi-Okoye made the call in Awka while speaking on the arrest of some Nigerians who abused the naira notes in social events by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Recently, A Federal High Court in Lagos handed down a six months prison sentence to Mr. Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky who was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for abusing the naira notes.

Commenting on the development, Chief Obi-Okoye described it as a welcome development as section twenty-one of Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007 clearly stipulates that spraying of naira notes is an offence punishable by six months imprisonment or a fine of fifty thousand or both for offenders.

The state APGA chairman explained that there is need for the relevant agencies to enlighten the people against the abuse of national currency like spraying or matching on the naira notes at events as it will enable them to know that such indecent acts could land them in prison.

Chief Obi-Okoye who is also a legal practitioner noted that it is a crime to reject naira note because it is dirty and called for sensitisation of Nigerians against such act.

The state APGA chairman noted that the EFCC acted in accordance with the Act that established it, which empowers it to combat economic and financial crimes, investigate, prosecute and penalise economic and financial crimes.
