The management of Mount Olive School, Onitsha, in Celebration of the 2024 International Women’s Day, assembled seasoned resource persons who spoke on various burning issues affecting women and children in the society at the school hall.

 

Addressing the mothers, Proprietor of Mount Olive School, Mrs Veronica Osanakpo, who recalled the themes of the celebration in the last four years, noted that equality of women runs through all the theme, which gave credence to the fact that more voices of women should be heard in all facets of life.

She noted that women have various tasks that are demanding, hence the need for them to also celebrate themselves, stressing that when a woman is trained, progress is accelerated.

 

On her part, Mrs Nonyem Osanakpo spoke on the need to invest in women for the benefit of more people, advising women to be each other’s keepers, develop self-confidence, be intentional at moving forward, just as she urged the government to bridge gender inequality gap for women’s voice to be heard.

A resource person and Associate Professor at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Dr. Chinelo Igwe, delved into the history of International Women’s Day celebration and ways to support the advancement of women and girls, a radio presenter, Mrs Ogoo Dike, spoke on child trafficking, causes and ways of controlling them, while a teacher at Prince Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha, Mrs Onyeka Ginigeme, spoke on child abuse.

 

Various speakers led by Ifunanya Amobi discussed “The ills of maltreating house helps by mothers and the way forward”, and identified physical abuse and neglect as the most common form of abuse.

They advocated certain age limit for house helps, and called for concerted effort to tackle the increasing cases of child abuse in the society.

 

Some of the teachers and parents, including Mrs Obiajulu Nuga, Stella Sylva and Mrs Peace Akpakama, shared experiences on forms of child abuse and advised parents to pay close attention to their children.
