Operatives of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra, OCHA Brigade have arrested over twenty women suspected to be sex workers in Onitsha.

 

The ladies who were arrested and paraded at the headquarters of the Brigade in Awka were nabbed in Ochanja, Onitsha South Local Government Area of the state.

Speaking on the arrest, the Managing Director of the Brigade, Mr Celestine Anere said they were arrested as part of the operation launched against social miscreants and are still being profiled and after investigations those found guilty will be charged to court.

 

Some of the suspects confessed to the crime, saying that they were arrested in their places of hustling.

 

One of the suspects who identified herself as Helen Ibeh from Abia State said she resorted to sex work because of hardship and as a means of supporting her family.

For Insedo Inshewuba from Benue state, she is an orphan and feeds herself and her younger sister from the job while Miss Esther John from Akwa-Ibom State revealed that she is a final year student but lacks fund to complete her school clearance and project preparations, before a friend introduced her to the “business”.

 

When asked about the knowledge of the State government empowerment programmes, they all claimed not to be aware since they have only spent a few days in the state.

 

Reacting to the arrest, the Secretary-General, National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS Zone F, Comrade Ifeyinwa Felix expressed shock and dissatisfaction over the activities of the promising young girls and advised them to engage in legitimate sources of livelihood.

 

In another development, the Brigade also paraded a developer, Mr. Onyeka Ibenekwe who packed building materials on an access road and blocked drainages with the material and warned developers to always make proper plans for their building materials, saying that roads in the State are not for private use.
