Early reportage of cases of gender violence and sexual molestation has been identified as the key to quick and proper dispensation of Justice for victims of such crimes.

Reports have also shown that the campaign against these vices can only be won if communities take ownership of it.

These were parts of the submissions at the formal presentation of newly trained Community Educators on Gender and Sexual Based Violence to their Community.

The event held at the Palace of the Traditional Ruler of Nawgwu was part of the activities on Household Discussions on Gender and Sexual Based Violence a programme implemented by Coalition of Eastern NGOs, CENGOS and organised by Center for Civil Resources, Documentation and Research Center CIRDDOC with support from Amplify Change.

In his opening remarks, the Programme Officer CENGOS, Mr Oluebube Ngige, who was concerned about the alarming increase in the number of sexual and gender based violence in the country, urged victims to seek for early intervention instead of adopting the culture of silence.

He noted that with the establishment of a Sexual Assault Referral Center at General Hospital Enugwu- Ukwu justice has been assured for the victims.

He listed the functions of the newly trained educators to include raising the confidence of community members to open up and speak out against human rights abuses with observed confidentiality as well as reporting such cases in collaboration with the Traditional Rulers and CENGOs

While thanking the organizers for choosing his community which urgently needed the intervention, the Traditional Ruler of Nawgwu, Igwe Okaa-Onwuogu, pledged his support towards ensuring the success of the programme.

On his part, the President General Nawgwu Town Union, Chief Nnamdi Bartlomew Okeke, said that the community chose the educators based on their antecedent with the belief that it will help fasten the positive effects of the campaign.
