Anambra State Government, has flagged – off the 2020 session of one month skill acquisition training for persons with disabilities in the state.


The programme which is ongoing in Enugwu-Ukwu,Njikoka Council Area, began in 2018 and is funded by the state government through its subvention for the physically challenged persons across the state, and will see over fourteen women trained in soap making, deodorant production, shoes and beads making, among others.


Association of Persons with Physical Disability (ASPWPD), a cluster from Joint Association of Persons Living with Disabilities, JONAPWD &ü[[[= an umbrella organization of persons with disabilities established in Nigeria in 1992 to promote the rights and development of nigerians with disabilities.


Flagging – off the training, the Special Adviser to Governor Willie Obiano on Disability Matters, Barrister Chuks Ezewuzie expressed delight over the judicious use of the subvention given to the association, assuring that the state government will continue to enact policies that will alleviate the plight of the physically challenged persons Barrister Ezewuzie used the occasion to sensitize people on the outbreak of coronavirus in the country and urged them to follow strictly the preventive measures drafted by the World Health Organization, and Anambra State Government in order to stay safe.


Earlier, while welcoming their guests, the Chairman, Association of Persons with Physical Disability (ASPWPD) Anambra State, Comrade Ugochukwu Okeke said that the core mandate of the training was hinged on self reliance as well as to ensure that the trainees in turn train at least one more person in their individual locality to be funded by the association.


Comrade Okeke appreciated Governor Willie Obiano and his wife Dr Ebelechukwu Obiano for supporting them and ensuring that the physically challenged in the state are considered in government’s policies and programmes.


In her remarks, the Head, Department Rehabilitation, Anambra State Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Mrs. Amaka Onyali, expressed happiness at how the executive body of the association was piloting the affairs with fruitful use of the subvention approved to its members and appealed to the women to make judicious use of the rear opportunity at their disposal.


Some of the trainees who spoke to the ABS, including Odinakachukwu Okeke from Ezinifite and Chidiogor Obizunwanne, appreciated the state government for the opportunity and expressed the hope that after the training, they would be able to make out a living from what they had learnt.
