Anambra State government has condoled with the family of Mr Simon Obi, over the death of their wife and her son.


Late Mrs Deborah Obi and her son, Late Baby Chisimdi Obi lost their lives in the unfortunate Ochanja market Fire incident on the sixteenth of October, 2019.


Government House correspondent, Ejike Abana reports that Governor Willie Obiano attended the funeral mass at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, Awka Etiti.


APGA National Chairman, Chief Victor Oye, Commissioners, top government functionaries, House of Assembly members, among others, attended the mass with the Governor.


Governor Obiano who expressed the State government’s sadness over the incident, called on the family and Awka-Etiti community, to bear the loss with fortitude, praying that there won’t be a repeat.


The Governor commended everyone who showed concern since the inferno, noting that government will continue to show concern and do its part in alleviating the sufferings of the masses.


In a homily, the Auxiliary Bishop of Onitsha Catholic Diocese, Most Reverend Dennis Isizo who reminded Christians that they are on a journey of faith to heaven, said that life on earth is temporary.


Bishop Isizo who stressed that heaven is a better place, said that God loves mankind so much, that he sent Jesus Christ for redemption, praised true mothers for genuine love they show to their children, pointing out that efforts should be intensified to check incessant fire outbreak, through a collaborative effort between government and the people.


He called on the Governor to ensure that relevant authorities don’t give people approvals for sitting of fuel stations in residential area , in accordance with the law and proposed that markets should mandatorily have separate locations for officers of the fire service, while individual shops should have fire extinguishers within their shops.


In appreciation, husband and father to the deceased, Mr Maduka Obi, thanked the State government for consoling them in this critical period of their lives.


Late Deborah was thirty four years, while her son, Chisimdi was eight months old.
