In line with the Anambra state government’s determination to give succour to the affected persons in the recent Onitsha fire outbreak which claimed lives, as well as properties worth billions of naira, the state government through the special panel constituted to investigate incident, has inspected the areas for proper identification of the fire victims.


The inspection started at Upper Iweka road by MCC where the petroleum tanker fell through Down Flyover area to Ochanja Main market and other major areas affected by the inferno.


The committee was led by its chairman, the state Deputy Governor, Dr. Nkem Okeke to the areas where names of the affected ones were called out for identification.


Addressing the people, Deputy Governor Dr. Okeke who commiserated with the victims of the fire disaster, encouraged them to exercise patience with the state government as it makes arrangement on assisting them to continue with their sources of livelihood and explained that the investigations are aimed at ensuring that the right people are compensated.


Deputy Governor Okeke assured the affected persons that the state government will do all that is necessary before Christmas.


He said that the state government has taken measures to preventing future occurrence of such an incident in the state, including procurement of more fire trucks and drilling of borehole facilities in market across the state Also speaking the state Commissioner for Public Utility and Water Resources Mr Emeka Ezenwanne who attributed escalation of some fire outbreak to untimely intervention, advised people to purchase fire extinguisher for offices, shops and home uses.


Earlier, the Traditional Ruler of Nteje community, Igwe Roland Odegbo reminded the victims of better things ahead.


Some of the victims that spoke to the ABS including Mr. Chidiebele Duru, and Mrs Fidelia Okoye who said they lost all they had including their residence to the inferno, recounted their loses and called for the urgent intervention of the government and good spirited individuals.
