Miss Faustina Mary Okoye of Handmaid Secondary School Amasea, has been elected the Speaker, Anambra state Children Parliament.

Miss Okoye assumed the position during the seventh Anambra state Children Parliament election and inauguration of principal officers conducted by the Ministry of Social Welfare, Children and Women’s Affairs at Professor Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Centre, Awka.

Other key officers elected were, the Deputy Speaker, Master Nnamdi Ibezim of Christ the King College Onitsha representing Onitsha South, Clerk of the House, Chidera Ezenwaka representing Awka North.

Also elected were the Ambassadors, Honourable Chioma Aduaka and Daniel Ezeaka of Comprehensive Secondary School Nawfia, Njikoka local government area.

Speaking shortly after the election, the Permanent Secretary, Women Affairs, Mr. Azuka Ofomata said efforts of Governor Willie Obiano in the education sector is yielding unparallel results.

Mr. Ofomata who expressed joy over their performances, noted that they will confidently represent the state creditably in any forum charging them to be of good character and worthy ambassadors of the state.

A consultant of Child Protection and anchor of the election, Mr. Emeka Ejide who said the children were articulate and intelligent in all their dealings, believed that they will perform well at the national level calling on Chairmen of Local Governments to improve on their council’s Children Parliament by funding them for the future.

For the outgoing Speaker, Right Honourable Eden-Rex Abana, the journey have been an exciting one, though there were hurdles and storms, the parliament makes and builds children to stand on their rights, advising the incoming Executive to take the children of the state to greater height and should not be controlled or manipulated.

In his acceptance speech, the incoming speaker Right Honourable Faustina-Mary Okoye thanked God for the elevation, stating that she is going to protect the rights of the Anambra children and expose them to meaningful things that will have positive impacts in their lives.
