Twenty-one years after the demise of their last traditional ruler, Igwe Nelson Okoye, the people of Umueri in Anambra East Council Area now have a new traditional ruler.
He is Chief Sir Beneth Izuchukwu Emeka.
Our reporter, Njideka Okoye was at Aviama Market Square, Umueri, where the fifty-nine year old Sir Beneth was elected Okebo the second.
Aviama market Square, was over flowing with men, women and youths from the twelve villages of Umueri who trooped out to choose their traditional ruler.
What would have been an election between two sons of the town, Sir Ben Emeka and Mr. Johny Metchie, turned out to be a voice vote as tumultuous ovation heralded the arrival of Chief Sir Ben Emeka.
The selection was supervised by officials of the state government and other observers.
The Vice Chairman of Igweship screening and election committee, Barrister Umeadi, explained the modality for their screening and election where Igwe Ben Emeka emerged the Igwe Okebo the second of Umueri and out lined some of the contributions of Igwe Emeka in Umueri.
The Special Assistant to the governor on Local Government matters, Mr Ike Muoedu observed that the people followed due process and the Igwe elect is the people’s decision following their response.     Â
The Igwe-elect was later coroneted at Ama Umueri by the Onowu Umueri, Chief Mike Ekweonu, who thanked God for selecting new traditional ruler for them after twenty-one years of the demise of Igwe Nelson Okoye, the Okebo first of Umueri.
In his acceptance speech the Igwe-elect Igwe Sir Ben Emeka, thanked the people of Umueri for finding him worthy and promised to serve with the fear of God. UPSOT
The Igwe-elect and his wife, Lolo Chinwe Emeka, in their regalia, danced to the Igbaeze.
