Rotary International has called on public spirited individuals and organizations to assist those affected by flooding in different parts of the state.

 

The call was made by the President of Rotary club of Awka Dr Emmanuel Ojukwu when he led other Rotarians from the club to donate relief materials and some cash to those affected by the deluge who are talking refuge at a holding centre located at the saint Joseph Memorial secondary school Aguleri in Anambra East local government Area.

 

Dr Ojukwu who described the deluge as worse than the one that happened in 2012, called for the immediate dredging of the River Niger and construction of more dams in Nigeria as part of measures aimed at checking the ugly trend.

 

He regretted the magnitude of devastation by the deluge , including the loss of many lives and submerging of houses and farmlands and commended the Anambra State government and some philanthropists who have been assisting those affected by the deluge with support materials and called for its sustenance.

 

Receiving the items donated to them, the commander of the holding centre Mr Chuks Kwasu thanked the Rotary team for giving them a helping hand and prayed God to reward them abundantly.

 

Among the delegation was a one-time Chairman of the Anambra State universal Basic Education Board ASUDEB Dr Rose Nwankwo.

 

Items donated were fifty tubers of yams, ten cartons of noodles, twenty bags of rice, bags of edible salt, cartons of biscuits, clothing materials and cash among others.
