All roads leading to various churches in Awka and environs were today adorned with palm fronds by Christians commemorating the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.
The day known as Palm Sunday, also marks the beginning of the Holy week; when Christ underwent sufferings, culminating in His crucifixion and eventual resurrection.
Christians were seen in their numbers going to their different churches with palm fronds and shouting Hosanna in the highest.
At Saint Gabriel’s Catholic church, Nodu-Okpuno, the mass started with the blessing of the palm fronds, which were also used to decorate the nooks and crannies of the church, depicting the mood of the season, and sprinkling of holy water.
In a homily, a visiting priest, Reverend Father Chamberlain Umeh urged Christians to honour Christ; whose kingship is supreme and to serve God with their resources.
At the Anglican Church of the Holy Spirit, Awka the vicar, Venerable Rex Kanu maintained that Christ’s followers should have the right state of mind as seen in Christ who lived in righteousness, purity and humility.
Venerable Kanu stated that the nature of Christ is servanthood, which he encouraged those in leadership to emulate to put an end to hardship and several challenges facing the country.
Also, at Saint Mark’s Anglican church Enugwu-Agidi, the vicar, Venerable Dr Nnamdi Enendu said that Christ came to bring peace and reconcile man with God so they can inherit His kingdom, charging Christians to recognize Christ’s supremacy above all other kings and gods.
Venerable Emendu noted that Christians were delivered from the shackles of the devil and saved by Jesus Christ, reminding people of the need to hold unto God and run away from all forms of sin.
Correspondent Amaka Chibuzor Okoye reports that series of prayers were offered for the state and country in general, while thanksgiving climaxed the services.
