The Anambra State Commissioner for Economic Planning, Budgeting and
Development Partners, Mr Mark Okoye says the upcoming National
Business Sample Census will further place the State on enviable
position as a hub for investments and businesses in Nigeria.
Mr Okoye made the statement in Amawbia while declaring open a three
day training for enumerators in preparation for the National Business
Census.
David Okpokwasili reports that the National Business Sample Census is
being conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics with the support
of World Bank and in collaboration with the statistical agencies and
stakeholders in the thirty-six states of the Federation.
The aim of the National Business Sample Census is to generate reliable
data in order to determine the structure of businesses in Nigeria with
the objectives to develop a national directory of commercial and
business establishments with all their associated social and economic
characteristics, and to provide the country with comprehensive and
detailed information about the structure of the economy.
Speaking at the training session, the Commissioner for Economic
Planning, Mr Okoye said data is paramount to planning and that the
census when conducted will equip the state government with the
necessary information to make policies that will boost the economy of
the state.
The Statistician General of the Federation and Chief Executive
Officer, National Bureau of Statistics, Dr Yemi Kale, represented by
the Director of Finance and Accounts, Mr Emeka Aziwe said the business
sample census which is supposed to be carried out every five years but
has been delayed because of resources for over twenty years will help
the Federal Government make strategic plans that will help micro,
small and medium enterprises to thrive.
Mrs Nkechi Okafor, the State Officer of National Bureau of Statistics,
on her part advocated the support of Ndi Anambra while clarifying that
the project is not targeted to collect money from any business.
The Statistician General of Anambra State, Mr Paul Obiekezie and the
President, Anambra Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and
Agriculture, Pastor Stephen Nduagwuba represented by Mr Valentine
Olisaemeka said the business sample census came at the right time when
most businesses are suffering the impacts of Covid-19 and as such,
information gathered from the census will enable scientifically driven
economic policies by the Federal and State Governments.
In attendance were Statisticians from both National and Anambra state
Bureau of Statistics, the Anambra State Commissioner for Trade and
Commerce, Chief Uche Okafor, represented by the Mrs Henrietta Ideh,
the Chairman, Anambra State Local Government Service Commission, Dr
Peter Egenti represented by Mrs A.I Olieh and the President General,
Anambra State Market Traders Association, ASMATA, Chief Ikechukwu
Ekwegbalu.
