Officials of the state Physical Planning Board have recovered government land encroached on in Oye Market farm settlement Igbariam, Anambra East Council Area.

The Executive Chairman of the board, Barrister Chike Maduekwe led officials of the board to the site at the instance of the Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Nnamdi Onukwuba who wrote them.

The farm settlement is an area of government land acquired over four decades ago.

A portion of the land hosts the permanent site of Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu University.

Recently, some people started erecting lock-up shops and other structures on the land against government orders.

The structures were marked for demolition by officials of the board on 11th May, 2020.

Giving a background to the essence of the exercise in a telephone interview, Commissioner Onukwuba who hinted that the land is part of the proposed government farm settlement under the FGN/IFAD Chain Development Programme (VCDP), said that the Ministry of Agriculture wrote the board to help them secure the land as illegal developers have started to bastardize the layout which is the property of Anambra state government.

Mr Onukwuba said that with the successful removal of the structures, the Ministry can continue to plan and put their people back to work.

Some of the farm dwellers who spoke to the ABS on condition of anonymity commended the move saying that they have been severally harrased and stopped from farming on the land, eventhough government gave them the lands to cultivate.
