Anambra State government through the “Dobe Anambra Ocha” campaign of the Ministry of Environment has commenced inspection of drainage systems and their surroundings in the State.
The inspection is geared towards reducing the numerous ecological challenges facing the state as the environment Task Force visits some strategic areas in Awka.
Correspondent, Chibuzo Obidike reports that Anambra State is the second smallest state in Nigeria by land mass but has the highest ecological challenges still threatening portion of Lands.
This perhaps prompted the present administration to embark on moves and initiatives towards tackling some of the man made environmental hazards.
When the team visited First Market Ifite-Awka,
residents and traders were seen cleaning up their water channels to make up for failure to comply with last month’s sanitation exercise as attested by the Chairman First Market Ifite-Awka, Mr Chinedu Nwogu and a trader Ify Ezike.
Contributing the Environmental Health officer of the Ministry Mr Oliver Ozomena and representative of Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra OCHA Brigade, Mr.Charlse Nwankwo said that the inspection is the second phase of Dobe Anambra Ocha, where defaulters of last Saturday sanitation exercise are served abatement notice to comply, while the Ministry ensure proper disposal of debris.
Speaking during the evacuation of debris in the area, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Environment who is also the Coordinator of Enforcement, Anambra Central team of “Dobe Anambra Ocha” Mr Francis Igwah, said that the enforcement is a strategic approach plan of the Ministry aimed at making sure that Ndi Anambra are environment friendly.
She said that any defaulter will be tried in a mobile court.
