Landlords in the state have been urged to make ownership of fire extinguisher mandatory for all tenants and a pre- condition for renting out accommodation.

Addressing residents of Awada Layout Obosi during a sensitization visit, the state Director , Anambra state Fire Service , Mr Martin Agbili, said this would help to prevent fire disaster in residential buildings.

Mr. Agbili enjoined families that use cooking gas to keep the cylinder outside the kitchen and always leave the windows of the kitchen open as well as keep children away from using the gas cooker or tampering with the cylinder.

He also stressed the need to keep kerosene lantern, candles and other naked flames on smooth mental surface and put flammable materials away from the area and sustain constant enlightenment of family members on all necessary fire safety tips.

The state fire Chief cautioned against over loading sockets and emphasized the need to put out all electrical appliances when not in use and urged petrol station attendants to ensure that every vehicle is turned off before filling in petroleum products .

Mr. Agbili called on the state Physical Planning Board to work closely with the Fire Service to ensure that all safety designs are included in every structure before approval is given.

He explained that the Agency is taking the fire safety campaign to schools, churches and is working to introduce community fire service through collaboration with ASATU and stressed the need to include fire safety education in school curriculum at all levels of education.

Mr. Agbili explained that they carry out fire simulation in markets to stress the need to provide open spaces that would give fire fighters easy access to the markets during emergencies.

Responding on behalf of the residents, Chief Paul Chinedu, thanked the fire Chief for the sensitization and called for establishment of a fire station at Awada while assuring him of their support and cooperation.
