Ndi Anambra have been warned against siting illegal structures without government’s approval, which can constitute security threat and nuisance to the environment.

The warning was given during the demolition exercise of illegal structures and shanties in Awka by the Awka City Development Authority, ACTDA, in collaboration with OCHA brigade and other stakeholders.

The demolition exercise which took place at the Ngozika Phase One Estate in Awka, saw illegal shanties and structures pulled down by bull dozer after the seven days notice served the occupants elapsed.

Speaking during the exercise, Managing Director of Awka Capital Development Authority, Architect Michael Okonkwo, noted that the exercise was a mandate given to them by Governor Willie Obiano to remove structures that constitute security threat and that have no approval from relevant agencies noting that it will be a continuous process.

Also speaking, the OCHA Brigade boss, Mr. Pat Obiefuna who noted that as an enforcement agency, they will make sure that the tempo of work in ridding of illegal structures in the capital is maintained and assured that they would not allow people to rehabit the demolished areas again.

Some of the affected occupants of the structures, Mr. Igwe Emma and Mrs Tina Peter, said that more time should have been given to them to properly move out their properties and relocate especially now that the Christmas season is here.
