Today is International Workers Day set aside by the American Federation of Labor to commemorate a general strike in the United States, which had begun on 1st May 1886 and culminated in the Haymarket affair on 4th May.
Speaking on the significance of the day, the Anambra State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Humphrey Nwafor, described the day as birthday for all workers; when they will all gather and celebrate their contributions and efforts to the growth of the state and ease off tension for some hours.
According to the Anambra labour leader, government at all levels should enhance the monthly pay of workers; noting that even though Anambra is paying eighty-two thousand naira as minimum wage as against seventy thousand being paid by many other states, the money is still not enough considering the inflation in the country and high cost of food stuffs in the markets.
While wishing every worker in the state a happy Workers Day, Comrade Nwafor urged all to endeavor to be at the Dr Alex Ekwueme square, Awka for the commemoration of the day.
