The state Ministry of Women and Social Welfare has sought robust partnership with the media on gender-based issues such as inheritance right, gender-based violence, maltreatment of widows, amongst others issues.

Speaking during advocacy visit to Wazobia FM and Sapientia Media, both in Onitsha, the state Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs Ify Obinabo, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs Chinwe Achugbu, noted that the International Woman’s Day 2025 with the theme: ‘Accelerate Action’ seeks to focus on issues that affect women and the need to sensitive the public on those issues, especially on relevant laws in place to address them, hence the need for the partnership with the media.

On her part, the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Women Affairs, Hope Okoye noted that the media has always been a key stakeholder on gender-based issues, but there is still need for a more collaboration.

In their remarks, the Station Manager, Wazobia FM Onitsha, Mr. Moses Okonkwo, and the Chief Executive Officer of Sapientia Media, Reverend Father Aloy Orakwe, explained that their stations have always done their parts by joining voices against issues that negatively affect women, aadding that their doors are open for more collaboration with the ministry, including on activities lined up for the 2025 International Women’s Day.
