World Towel Day is celebrated every 25th of May as a tribute to Douglas Adams, author of “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”, where he described towel as
the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have.
The commemorative day was first held in 2001, two weeks after Adams’ death.
Speaking on the significance of the celebration, a medical practitioner, Doctor Dominic Okeke , said the day is always aimed at enlightening the masses on the need for keeping one’s towel clean to prevent infection.
Doctor Okeke, recommended that one should wash the Towel, at least, once a week and always spread it under the sun after each use, to avoid breeding bacteria or fungi, which can lead to contraction of diseases, even as he noted that more than one person should not use a towel.
On his part, Mr. Peter Onyekwelu, while speaking to the ABS on the importance of towel and how he uses his, said he cannot do without it as he feels uncomfortable using another material to dry up his body after bath, disclosing that every member of his family has a personal towel.
