The federal government has been urged to join hands with state governments to find proactive and permanent solution to persistent flooding in Nigeria every year.
Reacting to the 2025 Annual Flood Outlook by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, which predicted that thirty-three states and the Federal Capital Territory are at high risk of flooding this year, the immediate past Vice President of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene, warned that unless something decisive is done, erosion-prone communities like Nnaka, Oko, Agulu and riverine communities will continue to suffer heavy human and material resources losses every year.
He enjoined the federal government to build more dams in various states of the country to collect excess water, especially from the Lago Dam in Cameroon, which he explained could equally be harnessed for irrigation and other agricultural purposes, while rivers in the country should also be dredged to expand their holding capacity.
Chief Okeke Ogene cautioned Nigerians against indiscriminate building of structures without approval and dumping of wastes in drainage systems and waterways, which he regretted often block free flow of water and escalate devastation of environment.
