Today, May one, is a very important day in the life of workers. May Day or Workers’ Day as it is known is a day that celebrates the very significant roles labour plays in the economy.
The welfare and rights of workers are legal rights and human rights that relate to labour relations between workers and employers. These rights are codified in the National and International labour and employment laws in general. These rights are like oil that lubricates the relationship between labour and the employer.
In Anambra, the Solution government of Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has shown willingness to address some of the challenges facing workers. They include the ten percent increment in workers’ salaries; implementation of the eighty-two thousand naira minimum wage; massive recruitment of teachers and health workers, payment of pension and gratuities to retirees and the intervention and suspension of deductions on the contributory pension scheme pending the resolution of the issues raised by workers and an end to the deductions to such purpose. This is why the organized labour in recognition of these efforts will today during the May Day celebration honour him with a special award for being the best worker-friendly Governor.
The Nigerian Labour Congress, Anambra State Chapter headed by Comrade Humphrey Nwafor, has taken the bull by the horn in prioritizing Anambra State Workers’ welfare above any other consideration.
This is why a week long activity was outlined to celebrate this year’s May Day which commenced with a football tournament for all affiliate unions of the congress. The competition kicked off with a match between the football team of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, at Igwebuike Grammar School field, Awka. The Awka South Mayor, Hon Chinedu Okafor kicked off the finals.
The NLC also embarked on a special humanitarian visit to Faith’s Community Motherless Babies Home, Awka. The visit was followed by a healthy living session and free medical outreach for workers by the wife of Anambra state Governor, Mrs Nonye Soludo and a workshop on “Accessing Loans for Small Businesses” by the Managing Director of Anambra Small Business Agency, ASBA, Dr Clement Chukwuka.
Today, May one, will climax with a match past at Dr Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka; a presentation of medals and cups to winners of the football tournament and merriment .
NLC Anambra State is grateful to the Governor’s wife Mrs Soludo; the Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike; his Works counterpart, Engineer Ifeanyi Okoma and the Managing Director of ASBA, Dr Clement Chukwuka for their support to the organized labour in the state. It also commends the Chairman of the May Day 2025 Planning Committee, Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu and members of his committee; the entire labour leaders and leaders of affiliate unions for their support to ensure that the congress in the state remains strong and formidable.
The theme of 2025 Workers Day is: “Reclaiming the civic space in the midst of economic hardship” and Comrade Nwafor is committed and dedicated to the welfare of workers in the state.
Congratulations to NLC Anambra state chapter
Solidarity! Forever!
COMRADE HUMPHREY NWAFOR
