The Transition Committee Chairman of Awka South Local Government Area, Mr Thankgod Anagor, has implored the Nigerian Red Cross Society not to relent in its voluntary services to mankind.
Mr. Anagor made the remark, while playing host to the new executive members of Awka South Division of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, who called on him in his office at the Awka South Council Secretariat.
While assuring the council’s readiness to collaborate and build a synergy with the Nigerian Red Cross Society to complement what Governor Chukwuma Soludo is presently doing in the primary health centers across the state, Mr. Anagor described Red Cross as old as mankind.
He appreciated their immense contributions in raising the living standards of the people, especially putting their lives at risk while rescuing people for care during war and communal crisis and promised to always attend to their needs.
The leader of the delegation and Awka South Divisional Chairman of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Chief Emmanuel Ezeobi, described Red Cross Society as an international philanthropic organization formed in consequence of the Geneva Convention of 1864, to assist for the sick and wounded in war and help relieve sufferings caused by pestilence, floods, fires and other calamities.
Chief Ezeobi, who unveiled the mission of the Society to include alleviating the situation of the vulnerable people which according to him, included those affected by disaster, epidemics, armed conflicts and the poorest communities in both urban and rural areas among whom are women, children, aged, displaced and other vulnerable people, requested for an office accommodation within the council secretariat to enable them get to the grassroots.
He said that their request is sequel to a directive by the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Anambra State Branch, mandating every division to move into their council secretariat before April 2024 for them to be part of the activities of their council area, as well as make the national society visible and impactful to their various areas.
