Key speakers at Dunukofia Security Awareness and Orientation Programme, have identified security information volunteering, adequate funding, training and retraining of security personnel as better ways to achieve effective community policing.

 

The summit, organized by the Transition Committee Chairman, Dunukofia Local Government Area, Mr. Austin Onyemaobi, took place at the Council’s headquarters, Ukpo.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Onyemaobi, charged them to take full ownership of their environment by reporting criminal activities and suspicious movements within their vicinities to security agencies to save the area from being taken over by criminals.

 

He revealed that the council area is following Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s model by mobilizing the people to take active charge of their security and appreciated Governor Soludo for launching security fund, which according to him, empowered the people to take ownership of their security.

In his address, the divisional police officer, Dunukofia Division, Mr. Babajide Coker, identified security as everybody’s business and urged the people to feel safe to give the Division security information that will be treated with confidentiality.

 

Mr. Babajide also appealed to well-to-do individuals within the local government to complement their efforts by providing them with operational vehicles, generators and motorcycles to facilitate their jobs.

On his part, the key note speaker, Sir Izuchukwu Nwabueze, who is also the chairman, Zone 13 Chaplaincy Forum, spoke on the theme of the summit ” The Roles of Communities in community policing and urged communities in the council area to cooperate with security agencies and support them through donation of funds.

 

Sir Nwabueze also stressed the need for government to put in place a good welfare package for security personnel, train and retrain them on community policing to guarantee effective community policing.

In his remark, the traditional ruler of Ifitedunu, Dr. Emeka Ilouno, harped on the need for government to equip security agencies properly and for the police to keep a good line of communication with vigilante service.

 

The summit climaxed with the naming of Otimgbodomgbo Road at Ukpo, after Dr. Athur Eze by Dunukofia Council Area, in appreciation of his contributions to the development of the area.
