Following the declaration of November sixteenth as work-free day by the Anambra State Government in honour of the Late Chief Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, the Owelle of Onitsha,
Staff reporter, Emengini Osadebe visited his country home, Ogbeabo village in Onitsha and reports that this year is the third consecutive one the State is observing the birthday anniversary of the Great Zik of Africa, the man who led Nigeria to Independence on first October, 1960.
At the visit to his Zik’s father’s compound situated at the heart of Ogbeabo village in Onitsha, ABS crew was received in a serene atmosphere, and also met one of his surviving step sisters, Lady Obiageli Azikiwe, who said she was overwhelmed and thankful that her brother is being remembered in the State.
Lady Azikiwe, who went down memory lane to tell of her late brother’s struggle for Nigeria’s independence, stated with nostalgia that her brother left an indelible mark in the sands of time, wishing him a posthumous birthday.
She prayed God to grant him eternal rest; while commending Governor Willie Obiano for declaring November sixteenth a work-free day, which according to her is a deserved honour.
ABS later visited Zik’s Mausoleum Conference centre at Inosi Onira, Zik’s Roundabout in Onitsha, and discovered that the compound is under lock and key, with no activity is going on.
It would be recalled that the buildings in the compound, which comprised a Mausoleum and Conference centre were constructed by the Federal Government as a monument in honour of the Great Zik of Africa.
All efforts made to get into the Mausoleum proved abortive; as Security guards on duty refused ABS entry into the compound as at the time of this report.
