As the world marks World Family Doctor Day, the Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria, SOFPON, has called for a multidisciplinary synergy among healthcare professionals to strengthen health systems and deliver high quality and affordable care to all.

 

The President, Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria, Dr. Nnaedozie Obiegbu stated this in Awka.

 

The event, which was first declared by World Organization of Family Doctors, WONCA in 2010, acknowledges the strides and accomplishments made in Family Medicine globally, and is celebrated on the 19th of May, every year.

 

The World Organisation of National Colleges, Academies and Academic Associations of General Practitioners and Family Physicians, known as World Organisation of Family Doctors is the global body for all Family Physicians worldwide that  comprises of one hundred and eighteen member organisations across one hundred and thirty-one countries.

 

The mission of the organization is to support family medicine practitioners and organisations around the world by providing a platform for collaboration, advancement of knowledge and research, and promoting, standardizing,       and improving healthcare delivery and quality of life in an equitable manner for all people worldwide.

 

The theme for this year’s celebration, is “Building the Future with Family Doctors”.

 

According to Dr. Obiegbu, the focus of this year’s theme resonates with the “Year of the Health and Care-Workers 2021” declared by the World Health Organization and noted that the association will continue with its efforts to increase the overall drive for primary care as the proper foundation for all healthcare.

 

He noted that the second pillar is geared towards building the future with family doctors and patients with new technology, as well as individual involvement as it brings to healthcare delivery training and experience to provide diagnostic and treatment expertise, become louder advocates for a system that is inclusive and equitable.

 

The President Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria pointed out that the time has come to develop strategies to transform and renew family medicine as a unique and indispensable discipline, in order to successfully ensure the profession’s future viability.
