The International Community is observing today as Family Day.

United Nations General Assembly, in its resolution of twentieth September, 1993, set aside fifteenth of May annually, to create awareness on issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families worldwide.

speaking on the essence of the day, Mrs Anwulika Epundu-Okonkwo while commending the United Nations for creating such an avenue to celebrate families which she observed plays a critical role in the development and existence of any society, pointed out that families should use the opportunity to retrace their steps to various norms and efforts of their ancestors which enabled them to make names for themselves and contribute to the growth and development of the then society.

Mrs Epundu-Okonkwo used the medium to call on parents to go back to the drawing board, in the training and inculcation of good morals in their children, and attributed the ever increasing crime and criminality in today’s society to failure in core parental responsibility

On her part, Miss Peace Ugochukwu, a student of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, emphasized that youths should always endeavour to maintain their families integrity at all costs, irrespective of where they find themselves.

Miss Ugochukwu however appealed to government at different levels to device means of reducing hunger and poverty which is presently ravaging many families.

On his part, the Special Adviser to Governor Willie Obiano on Disability Matters, Mr Chuks Ezewuzie regretted that some families deny their members with disability their rights and privileges because of their challenges emphasizing that for families to thrive as an indivisible entity, all members should be given equal opportunities.
