The Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging Governor Willie Obiano to set up a commission of inquiry to investigate the causes of the fire incident that gutted Nnewi Timber Market and ways to avert future occurrence.

The House also urged the Governor to compensate the affected traders to cushion the effects of the losses they incurred from the disaster.

The resolution was sequel to a motion of urgent public importance sponsored to that effect by the member representing Nnewi North Constituency, Mr Nonso Okafor during yesterday’s plenary in Awka.

House of Assembly Correspondent, Chukwuemeka Modilim was there and reports that while explaining the motion, Mr Okafor who sympathized with the affected traders, disclosed that goods and shops worth millions of naira went up in flames and urged Governor Obiano to compensate them so that they could go back to their businesses.

The Speaker of the House, Right Honorable Uche Okafor also sympathized with the affected traders and expressed confidence that Governor Obiano will assist them to return to their businesses and read out the resolution to the House, while the lawmakers supported it through a voice vote.

Also at plenary, the House adopted the report of the House Committee on public petitions headed by Chief Emeka Aforka on a petition against Mr. Henry Nwasike of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs by Awa Community in Orumba North Local Government Area.

After due consideration of the report, the House declared the letter of cancellation of Awa chieftaincy election written by Mr. Henry Nwasike on behalf of the Ministry of Local Government, as null and void and recommended that the winner of the election, Chief Israel Okeke-Ezue be issued with certificate of recognition as the traditional ruler of Awa Community.

The House also directed the Head of Service to post Mr. Henry Nwasike out of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs and urged Governor Willie Obiano to direct the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community affairs Mr. Greg Obi to ensure synergy between his office and the office of the Special Adviser on Local Government Chieftaincy and Community Affairs even as the House urged the Commissioner for local government, Chieftaincy and Community affairs to respect the constitution of Awa Community.
