Today is Ash Wednesday. The day marks the beginning of forty days Lenten Season across Christendom.

Religion correspondent, Amaka Chibuzor-Okoye examines the significant of the day and reports that Ash Wednesday, a day of sober reflection has been described as the most important aspect of the Christian calendar.

Speaking on the significance of the day, the Archdeacon, Adazi-Enu Archdeaconry, Venerable Chris Nkem-Okafor said the universal church uses the period as the penitential time.

Venerable Nkem-Okafor, who is also the Vicar of Saint Jude’s Anglican Church, Adazi-Enu opined that the imposition of ash reminds Christians that they are dust and unto dust they shall return.

He therefore charged Christians to sincerely repent from their sins in truth and spirit as well as pray fervently to restore the nation in a good shape.

The Assistant Parish Priest, Madonna Catholic Church Agulu, Reverend Father Nicholas Okekeocha noted that Christians are expected to fast and abstain from meat, which according to him, will enable them to be in absolute control of their flesh and also desist from sin.

He also implored them to use this period of Lent to live a life of prayer in emulation of Jesus Christ, who went into the wilderness to pray.

Special Holy Masses and services would be held across Christendom to mark the day.
