Oko community has conducted elections into the executive offices of Oko People’s Union.

 

The exercise, held at Oko Civic Center had earlier witnessed mild disagreement, with one group calling for postponement of the date.

 

However, reason prevailed when those supporting that election be conducted as scheduled that day, brandished placards, calling for a truce.

 

Some of the placards bear inscriptions like, “Oko supports the Government of Anambra State”, “Disobedience to Anambra Government is tantamount to treason, say yes to free, fair and credible election.

A Stakeholder in the community, Mr. Ebuka Ezindu revealed that Anambra state government gave them the date and it was right to conduct the election and that anyone who counters and obstructs the government and community from carrying out peaceful election is threatening the peace and harmony of the town.

 

Reacting, the leader of the team from the State Ministry of Local Governments, Town Unions and Chieftaincy Matters, and Special Assistant to Governor Obiano on Chieftaincy and Town Union Matters, Sir Ernest Igboanugo, said that they have observed the election and would report back to appropriate authorities.

At the end, the nine man executive elected to run the affairs of Oko People’s Union, for the next four years by the Oko youths are, Mr Amaechi Okoli, President General, Mr Alexander Ezekugobe, Vice President and Mr Anyiam Marcel, Secretary General.

 

Others are, Assistant Secretary, Maduabuchi Ezenwizugbe, Nestor Okafor, Financial Secretary and Treasurer Nwankwo Roland Ikechukwu.

 

The Public Relations Officer is Mr Chinedu Okeke, Internal Auditor, Mr Jeremiah Nwafor, and Chief Provost, Mr Aginam Christian Nonso.

 

The outcome of the election was certified by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Chieftaincy and Town Union Matters, Barrister Veraqueen Okonkwo.

The Caretaker Committee of Oko People’s Union led by Engineer Chukwudi Ifeakor, was dissolved, prior to the eleventh January 2021 election.
