As the International Community observes today as a day for the Girl Child, the Nigerian Girl Guides Association, Anambra State, has organized a programme where both young and old gathered and spoke against gender inequality.
Speaking at the event, the Wife of the Governor of Anambra State, Dr Ebelechukwu Obiano said that Girl Child should be given attention especially, basic education to bring them at par with the male child.
The Governor’s Wife represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Social Re-Orientation, Dr Mitchell Onugbolu frowned at some couples who expose their girl-child to negative life style adding that the recent rape cases witnessed in the society has turned to a global pandemic which should be condemned.
In a welcome address, the Deputy Chief Zone A of the Nigerian Girl Guides Association, Dr Nene Iroakasi while highlighting the theme of this year’s event said their voice is their equal future and when they speak out, the Girl Child will be valued.
A guest speaker at the occasion, Professor Sylvia Ifemeje outlined factors that militate against the right of a girl child in the society which includes culture, early child marriage, inheritance and harmful widowhood practices and advocated that Nigeria should stop paying lip service to the domestication of women and Girl Child laws.
In a goodwill message, Lady Maryann Eke-Izuchukwu a Girl child ambassador urged Mothers to have closer relationship with their Girl Child and monitor their movement as well be a role model to them.
In her remarks, the State Commissioner of the Girl Guides Association, Dr Helen Obi noted that welfare of a girl is paramount condemning the incessant rape and maltreatment faced by Girl Child during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event featured several displays by the guides while participants from the eight States that make up zone A were present.
This year’s theme is my voice, our equal future.
