The riverine communities in Anambra State no doubt have the advantage of all year round farming .
This is possible as the farmers in these communities can easily source water from the abundant rivers in their areas to nourish the crops in dry season .
Staff Reporter Blessing Ijedibia who was at the vegetable market Ose situates at the bank of the River Niger met vegetable farmers from Erenchere Island Anam who came to sell their produce . When vegetable is out of season in the upland in the dry season ,the riverine communities of Anam have more than enough to eat and sell .They view the commercial city of Onitsha densely populated as a save heaven to sell their produce for profit maximization . The vegetable farmers especially women convey different species of vegetable en route the River Niger to the vegetable market in Onitsha .
Such vegetables on display include ugu,,okor, green as well as unpopular specie of vegetable known as eliamionu ,
Buyers from different parts of the state and beyond were also seen negotiating price with the sellers and after purchase will reduce the size of the vegetable to small retail portion of fifty naira each . Some of the farmers including Mrs Obialunama Okoy and Nwanneka Joseph rated this years patronage low noting that a sizable basket of okor goes for two thousand, five hundred naira while a medium size basin can be purchased at one thousand ,eight hundred naira to two thousand naira ,they also said that a bunch of ugu goes for two thousand naira depending on the size . According to them, the cost of the crop production is not commensurate with what is realized from the sales due to low patronage .One of the buyers Nkiruka Nnadi said she prefer to buy vegetable at the Onitsha vegetable market as it is where Anam farmers with quality species of vegetables display their wares riverine communities in Anambra State no doubt have the advantage of all year round farming.

Such vegetables on display include pumpkin, Okro, green as well as unpopular specie of vegetable known as eliamionu.
Buyers from different parts of the state and beyond were also seen haggling for price with the sellers and after purchase will cut the vegetable to Small retail portion of fifty naira each.
Some of the farmers in the likes of Mrs. Obialunama Okoye and Nwanneka Joseph rated this year’s patronage to be low saying that a sizable basket of okro goes for two thousand, five hundred naira while a medium size basin can be purchased for one thousand, eight hundred naira to two thousand naira.
They also hinted that a bunch of pumpkin goes for two thousand naira and the price may be higher or lesser depending on the size.
They further disclosed that the cost of production is not commensurate with the purchase power due to low patronage.
One of the buyers, Nkiruka Nnadi said she preferred to buy vegetable at the Onitsha vegetable market as it is where fresh and good specie of vegetables are purchased.
