In Commemoration of the World Toilet Day, the Anambra State Ministry of
Environment has embarked on sensitization to end open defecation in Anambra State.
The exercise which kicked off from the premises of the Anambra Broadcasting Service Awka, saw officials of the Ministry of Environment, Anambra State Waste Management Agency, Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra, the National Youth Service Corps, among others in attendance.
Correspondent Chibuzor Okoye reports that World Toilet Day, otherwise known as World Rest room Day is a United Nations global observance, aimed at highlighting the issues about lack of sanitation
and why cleanliness is equally vital.
Commenting on the essence of the day, the Senior Special Assistant to
the Governor on Environment, Mrs. Florence Oraedum, said that the
exercise is to sensitize Ndi Anambra on the inherent dangers of open defecation and advised them to key into the vision of Governor Willie Obiano, which is to make Anambra the cleanest State in Nigeria.
The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Environment, Mrs Chinwe Aniemena and Special Assistant to the Governor on Environment, Mr. Francis Igwah urged Ndi Anambra to key into Dobe Anambra Ocha awareness Campaign and equally join in the crusade to end open defecation in Anambra State.
A Deputy Director in the Ministry of Environment, Mrs. Ngozi Anyaragbu assured that the Ministry will sustain the sensitization programme warning that henceforth, anybody caught defecating openly will be tried and punished accordingly.
A resident of Awka, Mr Pat Ekweozo said that open defecation is
an act of wickedness and appealed to government at different levels to
set up task force that will arrest and prosecute defaulters.
The theme for this year’s World Toilet Day is “Leaving No One Behind”.
