Journalists have been advised to make transparency and accountability their watch word as a gateway to good governance.
The Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, UNIZIK, Professor Stella Okunna stated this in a lecture during the 2018 Anambra Media Summit and Award Ceremony at the Godwin Ezeemo International Press Centre in Awka.
Anambra Media Summit with the theme “The Role of Media in ensuring Good Governance” was organized by the state Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, to create a platform for journalists to discuss topical issues relating to journalism and Nigeria at large as well as proffer solutions that will add values to good governance.
Delivering a lecture at the summit, Professor Okunna described journalism as the oxygen of democracy, pointing out that Journalists are indispensable as they promote good governance through daily reportage of news and events for the good of the government and the masses.
A Guest Speaker and a former Executive Secretary Broadcast Organization of Nigeria BON, Mr. Ossy Nweke,recalled some of the giant achievements of the Broadcast Organization of Nigeria to include digitalization of all media outfit, expanding her reach and clarity, maintaining best practices in every establishment as well as training and retraining of members among others in ensuring that the media have level playing ground to achieve their objective.
Other guests at the event including the chairman state Civil Society Networks, Prince Chris Azor, Head of Communications EEDC Mr. Emeka Ezeh and Managing Director of Anambra Newspapers and Printing Corporation, Mr. Chuka Nnabuife thanked the state NUJ for the summit, saying the media is the actor of peace in every nation, but frowned at the attitude of some journalists who shy away from workshops and seminars.
