In continuation of the governor Willie Obiano’s Tennis cup for clubs in the state, Nnewi Sports Club defeated Housing Club, three zero, at the Country Club
Onitsha thereby having a total of eighteen points in three matches.
In the first singles match in this week’s match, Fidelis Anierobi, of Nnewi Sports Club, defeated Ikenna Chukwuka of Housing Club, four/six, seven/six, four/one scratch
In the second singles, C. Uba of Housing Club lost to Ugochukwu Onyekwerre of Nnewi Sports Club six/one, six/one while the pair of Okwy Chukwuma and Ifeanyi Ezekaka of Nnewi defeated the pair of Eberechukwu Akuegbu and Egemuonye Nwabueze of Housing Club seven/six, four/six, two zero scratch.
Yesterday`s matches between City Club and Ichi Honda Club at Nnewi Sports Club and Elite Club will play Peoples Club at the Recreation Club Onitsha while Oko Sports Club plays Onitsha Recreation Club at the Onitsha Sports Club tomorrow.
In another development, at the finals of the East of the Niger Inter Clubs Tennis Open, junior tournament, played at the Onitsha Sports Club yesterday, Uchenna Obisike of Orlu Recreation Club defeated Francis Owulezi also of the Orlu Recreation Club by six/two, six/seven, six/one in the males under twelve category to clinch the cup.
In the females under twelve category, Ifechukwu Ejezie of Onitsha Sports Club, went home with the cup after defeating Amarachi Eze also of Onitsha by six/three, six/three.
Likewise, Michael Obisike of Orlu Recreation defeated Nzubechukwu Obiefuka of Nnewi Sports Club six/one, six/one to take the cup.
In the females under fifteen category, the only contender Chidinma Eze of Onitsha Sports Club took home the prize as she had no opponent whereas in the males category, Ifeanyi Enyiora of Nnewi Sports Club took home the prize, after defeating Ugochukwu Asinobi of Aba Sports Club by six/two, six/one.
Presenting the cup and cash prizes to the winners, the chairman, ENIC, Chief Kingsley Uduh, said the essence of the tournament was to harness budding talents in the game of tennis and enjoined those who lost not to lose hope as according to him, the loss will only spur them to achieving greater heights.
Chief Uduh called on organizations and individuals to key into government’s projects aimed at catching them young for a better and safer society.
