Governor Willie Obiano says he will not rest until the perpetrators of today’s shootings at St Philips Catholic Church Ozubulu that claimed many lives and injured many are brought to book.
The Governor was speaking when he made an emergency visit to the scene of the shooting earlier today.
Governor Obiano who was on arrival at the Church briefed by the Parish Priest and the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Garba Umar, described the killings as barbaric and totally unacceptable but debunked insinuations of possible invasion of any kind.
He revealed that intelligence reports have connected the shooting to a feud existing between some members of the Community living abroad, saying that it is an isolated case.
The Governor called on worshippers across the state not to panic but to go about their normal activities, assuring that his government is on top of the situation.
Speaking to newsmen, the Parish Priest of the Church, Reverend Father Jude Onwuaso who revealed that the incident took place at about 6.30am during a holy mass, when an unidentified man wielding arms came into the church and started shooting sporadically, confirming that at least 11 parishioners died on the spot while about 25 injured persons have been taken to the hospital.
Governor Obiano later visited the injured persons receiving treatment at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi where he promised that the State Government will pay for their hospital bills, adding that 50 doctors have also been mobilized to provide support to the hospital in providing the best medical care to the injured persons.
From the hospital, Governor Obiano headed straight to Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral, Nnewi where he intimated the congregation on the true picture of the incident, assuring them that there is nothing to worry about as the Security Agencies are investigating the incident.
