The State Commissioner for Social Welfare, Children’s and Women’s Affairs, Dr. Mrs Victoria Chikwelu, has expressed worry over the Co-habitation of male and female students of tertiary institutions.
In her message to the just-concluded August meeting of the Catholic Women’s Organization, CWO, Saint Paul’s Parish, Abba, Mrs Chikwelu who alerted mothers on the dangers of such co-habitation, described such false marriage now trending in institutions of higher learning, as unacceptable.
The Commissioner, whose message was delivered by the Chairperson, Abba Town Union, Women’s Wing, Mrs Louisa Obiorah, linked the many cases of broken marriages to such unhealthy practice as a young girl who jumped, early, into pre-marital activities with its attendant social and psychological challenges, cannot withstand true marriage.
She asked mothers to get closer to their children, especially the girls, to know when they derail, even as she called for a better grooming of the girls to turn out good wives and mothers.
The Commissioner, who also harped on use and disposal of diapers by young mothers, admonished them to always consider their families’ economic strength so as not to put undue pressure on their husbands.
She said mothers can do with cloth napkins, which under good sanitary condition, is more economical, warning that when and if diapers must be used, efforts must be made to ensure they are well disposed of, afterwards.
Addressing the mothers on women’s health, Reverend Sister Dr. Nicholate Dim, who dwelt on cancer of the cervix caused by the human papiloma virus, recommended Pap smear for women from the age of twenty-one years for early detection of any adverse situation.
Dr. Dim told the women to take extra care of their bodies and guard against infections which could come from dirty toilets and environments as well as from sex with infected persons or multiple partners, stressing the need for them to see a physician any time they notice any abnormality in their body system such as itching in their private parts or high body temperature.
